It was about 15 years ago now when I first got introduced to dirt track racing. I had went to Huset Speedway in Brandon South Dakota.
This was my first time have being to a race of any sorts. And to say the least, I was pretty curious about it.
To first hear the cars pull on to the track for hot laps was pretty intense. This is the time that is used to warm up their cars and let the racer’s rev them up to keep from damaging the engines. As I seen a green flag being waved an immense thunder filled the track. I almost instantly decided I liked this stuff.
I was on the edge of my seat to see them start. As the cars all lined up, the qualifying laps we’re about to start. As I sat and waited I seen the green flag drop again. And almost instantly stop because of 2 of the cars getting tangled together.
The first thoughts in my head, was that I hope he’s okay. About that time I see one of the drivers getting out of his car appearing to be shook up. He then turned to the other driver in the otger car that he got tangled with, and punched him in the helmet. It took about two seconds for about 10 to 15 track officials to come and carry him away. Yes, this racing thing is pretty intense.
After the race some of the friends we were with knew some of the racers and took us down to the track pits. As big as the cars looked at a distance the sprint cars were little bigger than a golf cart. With giant wings, and 300 horsepower motors.
It was at this time I couldn’t help think back to my childhood. And how this never seemed to work out very well for the coyote when he was chasing the roadrunner.
Across South Dakota there are several different kinds of race tracks. Ranging from drag strips, to dirt tracks like what I’m talking about. There are even four-wheeler and bike tracks. Which I will discuss up and coming. But the one I’ve got to spend the most time and the most races, is Wagner Speedway.
Located in Wagner South Dakota, Wagner Speedway is not quite the size of Husets. However, it is just as entertaining.
With hobby stock, B-mods, late model’s and sprint cars. They have a awesome variety to watch and race in. All of which are bound to give you a good show. It also varies the cars that race night to night. So you won’t see the same races all the time. They have a schedule on their website to let you know what’s coming up. https://www.wagnerspeedway.com/
For thoughs looking for thrills in South Dakota, this is the way to go. And for an affordable price, you can’t really go wrong.
They also have one of the most vast concessions I have ever seen. Even if you eat before you come, they will lure you into buying some amazing smelling goodies. They also have a wide variety of beverages.
With plenty of seating, good food, and a ton of fun, it’s well worth the price of admission.
So the next time it’s Friday night, and your looking for something to do. Go to Wagner Speedway. You won’t be disappointed.
Or if your a racer. Looking to get into a Friday night race, I’m almost sure they would love to see you there.
As for Huset Speedy, will it ever come back? Only time will tell……
