In western South Dakota is a road that winds its way through the mountainous area in the Black Hills. A road I had only heard about in my years as a South Dakotan. And only first visited just last year. With views that can take your breath away. The heights, the landscape, and the natural beauty are all worth the drive.
Otherwise known as Highway 87, the Needles is a 14 mile road that is some of the most rugged terrain South Dakota has to offer. And it should be known, that the Needles isn’t for the faint of heart. The height combined with roads that seem to drop off into no where can be a little worrisome. And If your a person that likes to drive on big roads with lots of room, this probably isn’t going to be your thing. The caves that are on the this road are one lane only in most spots. Top that off with a curve in the road about every 50 feet or less. You then have a 14 mile trip that will take you much longer. And I can only imagine how long it might take in the winter. So why go down the road?
Because it has some of the most breathtaking and other worldly scenic views in the state.
The tunnels alone may make it worth your time. To see these up close is awe inspiring. To blast their way through huge chunks of granite. Created in 1922 with guidance of then South Dakota Governor Peter Norbeck. They made a road through an area with a seaming precision. In an era that used only dynamite, pick axes, and chisels. In an area I can’t imagine is much fun to work in. That would be enough.
Then you have the rock formations. Which is where the highway gets its name. Long narrow towers of granite tower through the landscape. Creating a surreal atmosphere that shines through the skyline. With a sparkle that reflects the light off of the rocks. Yet having a rugged, untamed, and unbroken piece of South Dakota.
Then there are the trees. I was lucky enough to visit in fall. And the leaves looked amazing. With beautiful colors of orange, red, yellow, and green from the evergreen trees. It looks like something from a dream.
All of that with a scenic look for miles. Sprinkle in some wildlife, and you have an incredible drive. And if you made it this far, you have to stop at Sylvan Lake. A beautiful lake that has more amazing sights. And even some easier hiking trails.
In short, this is one is an amazing drive. That can be an incredible adventure. And even though it was my first time driving through the Needles, I’m sure it won’t be my last. And quite frankly, became one of my personal favorite South Dakota roads. And one I could definitely recommend.
Until next time
