“This is going to be so scary Brian! Thanks for talking your mom into letting us spend the night.” “Shhhhh! Tom! You’re going to wake her up! Mike. Come on or we are going to leave you!”
“I don’t know guys. Couldn’t we get in trouble for breaking into the house?” “Weenie! I knew we shouldn’t have invited you Mike.” “Tom! Shut up! Maybe I shouldn’t have invited you? Mike, we’ll be fine. The house has been abandoned for years now. You have a better chance of running into a racoon or skunk.” “I know but. Wait. Do you really think there might be a skunk inside?” “See Brian. This is what I mean. He’s a weenie.” “We’ll be fine Mike. We have flashlights. It’s the middle of the night. Everyone is in bed. And no. I don’t think we’ll see any skunks. I was just making a point that no one has even lived there since old man Anderson killed himself there. That’s why they claim it’s haunted.” “But really guys? It’s Halloween. And we are trying to break into an abandoned haunted house? Is this such a good idea?” “I thought I had heard that the house was haunted because that one guy that lived there before Anderson killed his family there? And that was why it was haunted.”
As they walk up to the fence to go into the house the wind and cold seemed to become more and more fierce. The leaves danced across the front yard with only a cold outline of a house to be seen. As they slowly huddle up and move closer a cat streaks in front of them. “Ahhhh! What was that?” “It was just a cat Mike. Relax.” “You guys are just as scared as me. Admit it.” “You know Brian, maybe this isn’t a good idea. I mean, we could get the cops called on us.” “I’m not bailing now! We came this far. We are going in.”
Brian reaches into his pocket and pulls out a flash light that he aims at the door. He notices the door isn’t latched. Brian slowly edges the door open and starts walking in. As they walk in they notice furniture and knickknacks with dust and cobwebs tied together. It looked as though it was just forgotten. And left in time. Brian edges up to a shelf and picks up a picture. As he blows the dust off he looks at it. It was old man Anderson. “It’s kind of surreal. Like time just sort of forgot about this place.” “I know what you mean Tom. I can’t help but feel bad. I mean these are pieces of his life. Gone forever.” “Ok guys. Can we go now?”
Suddenly a large thud came from upstairs. “What was that?” “Um Brian I hate to agree with Mike, but maybe it’s time to leave.” “I’m going to check it out.” “I’ve watched way to many horror movies to fall for that one. I’ll wait down here.” “All by yourself Mike? Wow. You are getting brave.” “Ughhh. Damn you Brian! Fine. Go look for instant death then.”
As they walked up the steps they can hear the steps creak under their feet. As the wind howls even more outside. As they get to the top of the stairs they look down a long hallway. Another loud bang comes from the room at the end of the hall. The door is just cracked open. The boys were now terrified to the point of not being able to speak. They slowly creep forward. Brian reaches out his hand and pushes the door opened. The creak of the door almost drowned out the sound of their heartbeats faster and faster. They edge their way into the room. A dusty bed and dresser fill the room.
Suddenly a loud bang and a scream comes from behind them. They turn the flashlight to see a large black figure blocking their way out as well as the source of the screaming. All three of the boys fall screaming to the floor as the flashlight falls away from them. As the flashlight rolls on the floor another bang comes from inside the room. As the flashlight slowly rocks to a halt another large black figure appears from behind the bed. As it raises up it reaches out for the boys. The black figure lets out a blood curdling scream.
The boys huddle onto the floor with tears of terror running down their faces. Suddenly Mike jumps up and dashes to the hall way knocking over the black figure and ran out of the house. Seeing this as his last opportunity to escape, Tom jumps up and quickly try’s to follow.
Brian jumped up, but something seemed wrong. He suddenly heard the laugh of two girls. So he reach’s out to the black figure and tears back a mask. “You guys are hilarious.” “Jill! What the hell! You almost gave us a heart attack!” “Sorry. Me and Samantha couldn’t resist. We heard you guys talking at school how you were going to go on this little adventure. So we just waited for you. Oh. And by the way. This is my uncle’s house. He passed away 5 years ago. Of old age at the hospital. He didn’t kill himself.” “Um. Sorry.” “No problem. I would say I got even.” “Yeah Brian. The look on your faces was priceless.” “Yeah. Um. Hi Samantha.”
As they continue talking they make their way outside to the gate. Brian felt foolish. He was tricked. “How did you make those loud bangs so convincing Jill?” “What bangs?”
As he looked back to the house he seen a flash of light from one of the windows with an outline of a figure in the window. And slowly he seen the the door creak back closed.
Happy Halloween. Until next time.
