When I was a kid, I remember a small town restaurant. It was called “The Frosty Shop”. This was a hot spot for my friends and myself. I remember us jumping on our bikes riding uptown and getting a treat. But what should we get?
We may have got a loaded foot long. That thing had to be more than a pound of chili, cheese, pickles, onions, and cooked goodness. Or maybe we would get their cheese balls that were amazing bites of cheesy goodness. They truly shined with their treats though. Whether you were getting a ice cream sandwich. A dipped cone.(One of my favorites) Or getting a giant banana split with several different toppings. Not enough money? They had something for that too. With a huge assortment of candy. I liked the candy necklaces. The ring pops and fizzy candy were awesome as well.
It was a memory of my childhood I won’t soon forget. A simple small town restaurant, that had a huge impact on me as a kid. With warm smiles. Awesome food. And a ton of memories. A restaurant that has disappeared to nothing but a memory.
In South Dakota there are a ton of these little restaurants. But even before the craziness the world has been going through, a lot of them were struggling. With limited support and available workers. A lot of them will become a memory. Small mom-and-pop businesses across South Dakota need your help. And if I had to guess, you have one of these places in mind right now.
Nobody can truly predict where things are going for the future of South Dakota and it’s small business’s. But if you have a favorite restaurant or business that you don’t want to see disappear, make sure you frequent them. And help them the best you can.
A lot of bars and restaurants accept carry out. A lot of businesses have increased measures for you to patronize their store or restaurant. As South Dakotans we stick together. Helping each other out. And holding close to our hearts, the things we care about. It’s up to us to help them where we can. Besides, you didn’t feel like cooking tonight anyways right?
Until next time.
