So your on vacation? Visiting family? Or you live in Bon Homme county and your looking for something to do? Or maybe your just hungry and looking for some great food ?

I’ve lived in South Dakota most of my life. And it amazes me how many times food in this area gets over looked for some of the bigger cities in South Dakota. A lot of the places that I’m going to list here to eat are not necessarily the most amazing places to look at from the outside. They are definitely hidden gems though. They may not have a huge sign stateing they are the greatest in the world, but they are definitely worth your attention.

Keep in mind, im picking out only one food item from every area. Even though they may have several that are very good. I have also excluded chain restaurant food. Only the ones off the grid.

This challenge can be done over the amount of time that you prefer and can be done in any order. As long as you hit the items on the list. And after you mark them off, let your friends know.

With that, good luck. And have fun. The Bon Homme Restaurant Challenge.

Rec Bar

Chislic

It never occurred to me until about 5 years ago that chislic was something that didn’t exist in the rest of the world. It also didn’t cross my mind that one of the best places to get this wonderful meat would be in the very first place that I first tried it.

Cooked on a grill, the chislic from the Rec Bar is a amazing burst of flavor on a stick of goodness. I love to top mine off with just a dash of garlic salt and fries. Located in Scotland SD, the first item of the challenge will definitely only be a wonderful taste of things to come.

The Dock

Philly Steak Sandwich

Located outside of the town of Running Water, this is one of the most scenic stops. Were you can eat outside and enjoy the view of the Missouri River.

This wonderful sandwich is as good as it comes. With a nice toasted bun and a thin sliced steak, peppers, onions and cheese. This one will tease your taste buds.

Tyndall Bakery

Rolls

The Tyndall Bakery is almost legendary. And if its your first time there, it will be a great experience. Looking around and smelling all the fresh breads, donuts, and cakes is almost a treat itself.

This one could almost have it’s very own blog. Tyndall Bakery rolls.

Whether you enjoy nice apple cinnamon fritters that seemed to melt in your mouth and burst with flavor. Or maybe you prefer the kind that have cherry or bavarian filling. With or without nuts. The big problem with this stop, is that you’re probably going to eat more than one.

Springfield Pub

Pizza

So you think you’ve tried some of the best pizza around? You have may have missed a good one. Springfield Pub bar and grill in Springfield should be a stop for all Pizza Lovers.

With a wonderful homemade dough, incredible ingredients, and what seems like the perfect amount of sauce. This gorgeous pizza could give some of the best a run for their money.

Country Drive In

Ice Cream

This is one of the newest on the list. However, don’t underestimate its magnitude. The country Drive-In is a force to be reckoned with on a great number of things. Located on highway 50 in Tyndall South Dakota. This little restaurant packs a punch. Least of which is its ice cream.

With root beer floats, malts, sundays, and flurries. You really can’t help feel like a kid and want to try them all.

They also have flavor burst ice cream. With 10 different flavors to choose from. All of which I have tried are very good. I recommend the birthday cake.

The Keg

Burgers

The Keg, located in Tabor, is another must try stop. With some awesome burgers, you may just want a second one.

But to truly experience this one in its full glory, you have to get one of these on Czech Days. Even though their burgers are wonderful all the time. You will be able to smell these ones the minute you get out of your car. Cooked on a huge pit grill, they have a flavor that’s tough to beat. I prefer them “with” onions.

Main Stop

Chicken

I know what you’re thinking. Good food from a convenience store?

Main stop is way more than just a convenience store. It truly have some incredible homemade dishes made daily. With a warm staff that will greet you with a smile. Before I get carried away though, what about the chicken?

Fresh juicy meat with just a hint of seasoning. Covered in a nice crispy shell cooked to a golden brown. It could very easily compete with some of the very best around. This one is very much a personal favorite for me.

The Corner Bar

Wings

The Corner Bar in Tyndall is next on this list. Great place to stop for a hungry appetite. With an awesome staff, good food, and good fun. It probably won’t be the last time you go there.

Their wings are definitely a personal favorite of mine. Covered in your choice of sauce, as well as a dipping sauce. These guys have a flavor that you won’t soon forget. You might want to get the big basket.

Norm’s

Cheese Ball’s

Located on main Street Springfield, they have what you need for food. Featuring great specials on Fridays and Saturdays.

But what could be so special about cheese balls right? My simple answer is , I don’t know. They are truly amazing and you get a huge amount of them. Maybe its the oil? Or maybe its the fryer? What ever it is. It is really good.

Tyndall Lanes

French Fries

At first glance when you walk in, it may seem as though Tyndall lanes barley have a kitchen. Dynamite comes in small packages though. They have a nice selection of food for sale. And I’ve never been disappointed with anything I’ve had there. As a matter of fact it is very good. And you can watch it cooked right in front of you.

The fries though? All of these places serve fries on t he list. So why are these different?

They are cooked to a golden crisp that has a wonderful crunch and full of fresh flavor. They also seem to measure them out with a dump truck and have a almost dollar menu price to match. You definitely get your moneys worth.

Kitchen Table Cafe

Steak Tips / Steak

The Corral is next on the list. It’s located on main Street Tyndall. A newly revamped interior and new menu give this almost historic restaurant a very homier charm. With wonderful specials and menu that is sure to give you something that will please. Jean-Na Bea’s Corral is a slightly different Corral restaurant than what i remember going to as a kid. The food is just as wonderful though. And it can be seen that a lot of heart goes into it.

On to my favorite food group though, Steak. The steak tips are amazing. And just a wonderful addition to this list. Full of flavor and juicy. These wonderful morsels will get your attention. They also occasionally have steak specials. I have yet to try one of these, however I’m told they are just as amazing. I have no doubt i will keep my eye’s open, and be trying these soon as well.

Pietz Kuchen Kitchen

Kolache

Located in Scotland, Pietz Kuchen Kitchen is another wonderful addition to this list. They specialize in kuchen kolaches and pizza. All of which are very good.

Maybe it is the czech in me coming out, but I love their kolaches especially. Kolaches are a bread pastry filled with various kinds of different fruit. They are truly a unique treat like no other.

This has been a very fun article to write. Since I like a lot of different kinds of food. And for sure there are other foods that could have made the list from the same places. The main thing about this challenge is to have fun and enjoy.

This is great! We will try to visit as many as possible.
Two suggestions, can you add the times and days open? And, at least on the last two, the location isn’t apparent. Thanks.

I’m glad you like it. And thanks for your feedback. I will definitely edit it and add thoughs things.?

  2. Lorraine

There’s a new place called Ride or Dine in Scotland! And what about the Avon gas station and bar/restaurant?

    • jeremy.bertrand1978

I’m definitely going to check out the Ride and Dine. I was told by a few they should be included. So they will be added. I also would have liked to include Avon. Do you have some suggestions for me? I have not ate there yet and I was having a very tough time finding online information.

I would like to add that The Dock is also infamous for their mountain oysters. They are not cut paper thin so you can taste the meat and not just the breading. You get a good-sized basket of them too!!

  4. Janet Phillips

Jeanna Bea’s Corral has a fantastic chicken fried steak and was recently visited by Ty Burrell from Modern Family. Great addition to Tyndall!

  5. Jeanna phillips

Jeanna Beas is located in downtown Tyndall. Would love for you to visit

  6. Lorraine

In Avon it’s Tolsma’s Cove across from Ron’s Market at the end of Main street and then A-1 Gas and Go along hwy 50 on the west side of town. I’ve eaten at both places but not recently.

  7. Lisa Gorman

Next time I go back home to visit I’ll stop by some of these places

Kinda forgot about Avon. But I was told once I’m not a BonHomme business ( in Avon)??????

    • jeremy.bertrand1978

When I put together this list it was with my own experience and using Google. When you Google Avon and restaurant it shows the Pour Corner and Tyndall business only. This just means Google isn’t picking up on any restaurants because of a lack of internet presences. As I explained, on another comment, I truly wanted to include Avon.

There WILL be a second version of this list. And I will definitely include it. A quick piece of advice. In order to show up as a restraraunt for Goole is easy. Have a few customers post reviews or start an active Facebook sight with pictures and info. This will allow people to see you if they are in the area looking for the a place to eat. Looking forward to eating there. And thank you for the comments.
